Information security management

ISO 27001 that works
beyond the certificate.

Build an ISMS that management can run, teams can use and auditors can test without turning the standard into a paperwork programme.

Start with clarity, not an unnecessarily large programme.

What good looks like

An ISMS should make control easier to see.

A mature ISMS makes ownership, control activity and evidence visible without forcing the organisation into unnecessary process.

Management ownership

An ISMS should make responsibility visible, not bury it in documentation.

Working controls

Policies only matter when control activity can be seen in day-to-day operations.

Defensible evidence

Evidence should show that the system is operating, reviewed and improved.

Proportionate effort

The system should fit the organisation, risk profile and certification scope.

Governancy approach

From certification pressure to a system that runs.

The sequence starts with scope and current control, then builds only what is needed to operate, test and improve the ISMS.

Scope the system

Confirm organisational boundaries, services, locations and dependencies.

Establish the baseline

Assess the current ISMS, controls and available evidence.

Close material gaps

Prioritise actions that affect control, risk or auditability.

Test and improve

Use internal audit and management review to prove the system works.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE

Which ISO 27001 route fits your organisation?

ISO 27001 is not a single project with a universal starting point. The useful next step depends on the ISMS you already have, the evidence behind your controls and the assurance that customers or auditors require.

If the current position is unclear

Start with a gap analysis. Review scope, risk treatment, the Statement of Applicability, actual control activity and available evidence. Use the findings to choose which gaps deserve attention first.

If implementation is under way

Build the processes that management and owners can operate: risk acceptance, control ownership, review, incident learning, internal audit and management review. Existing systems can be retained when they provide reliable evidence.

If the ISMS is operating

Arrange an impartial internal audit against the agreed criteria. This is different from having the consultant who built a control simply approve their own work.

Questions to settle before commissioning

Will ISO 27001 certification automatically demonstrate NIS2 compliance?

No. An ISMS can provide a strong basis for risk management and evidence, but applicability, governance and legal requirements must be assessed separately.

Can we work with our current software and processes?

Yes, where they are effective. Governancy does not require a proprietary ISMS platform as a condition of support.
